AWARD-WINNING DORIC FILM FESTIVAL TO CELEBRATE NORTH EAST TALENT
North east film makers are hard at work preparing for a unique celebration which will take place in Aberdeen this summer.
In honour of The Doric Film Festival being crowned winner of the “Scots Cultural Project o the Year” at the 2024 Scots Language Awards, plans are underway to host a celebration of participants’ achievements and look at highlights from the Festival over the years. It will take place at the Robert Gordon University in June and will showcase not only the event itself but also how it has helped create an important stage for filmmakers to display their work.
New work is also being sought for the 2025 gathering and, continuing the celebratory tone, this year’s theme is: “Weel deen abidy.” It is hoped that it will once again draw a diverse range of creative work in the form of short films by individuals, groups and schools in celebration of the richness and diversity of Doric culture in the region.
The acclaimed Doric Film Festival, which is supported by the Scottish Government, is the brainchild of award-winning Scots Radio Director Frieda Morrison who created the platform to celebrate the Doric language and its cultural identity.
Frieda said: “The recent winning of a Scots Language Award provides the ideal opportunity to pause and reflect on all that The Doric Film Festival has achieved, and to pay tribute to the many talented film makers who ensure it continues to go from strength to strength. We are indebted to them, and the many others who support our endeavours in so many ways, and we look forward to celebrating together this summer.”
Winner of the judges’ Smeddum Award 2024 Lindsey Colin Wilson added: “North-East Scots — Doric, if you prefer to call it that — especially the spoken tongue, is completely excluded from other media. The Doric Film Festival is important because it provides an outlet that doesn’t exist elsewhere.”
